I hold an M.A. in English from the University of Oklahoma, with a concentration in Native American Literature. I also hold a B.F.A. in Creative Writing from the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA), with a minor in Indigenous Liberal Studies. I’m a recipient of the Truman Capote Scholarship Award through IAIA, and also a winner of the Native Writer Award through the Taos Summer Writers Conference. I have short stories published in South Dakota Review, American Short Fiction, Yellow Medicine Review, Surreal South ’09, and Red Ink Magazine.
I’m a regionalist Native American writer of literary fiction, interested in capturing intertribal, transnational, and multicultural aspects within two tribally specific communities: Tahlequah and Lawton, Oklahoma. I was raised inside these tribal circles and continue to reside there today. I’m a citizen of Cherokee Nation and the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma from my mother (Hokeah and Stopp families), and I have Mexican heritage from my father (Chavez family) who emigrated from Aldama, Chihuahua, Mexico.

You’ve been on WordPress more often lately and I’m glad to see it. Obviously work on your novel has more important but I value your perspective…and you’re a superb wordsmith to boot.

Thank you, David. Yeah, I have a little more time right now. It’s a small window. Soon I’ll be jumping onto the next novel. But I just turned in the edits to the debut novel so I’m finding myself here in the blogsphere a little more. Thank you for your support. I hope to be more consistent now that I’m passed deadlines. Well, until the next set of deadlines come up, lol. 🙂

I don’t know how closely you follow my writing but I have been experimenting with fiction myself lately. I’ve written two “Aurora Zone” stories and two magepunk (steampunk with magic) set in the world of two books for which I did extensive artwork about ten years ago.
I’d like to get your take on them.
